Bold change comes from bold action, which is what the Nebraska Immigration and Workforce Summit did this June.
This year, the Nebraska Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s research division commissioned the Economic Leadership group to evaluate the state’s economic competitiveness, which resulted in Immigration and America’s Workforce Shortage report, highlighting the need for immigrant inclusion in the local workforce.
Nebraska currently faces a significant workforce shortage, with over 50,000 job openings across key industries. Statewide demographic trends reveal increasing pressure on the labor market. As the large baby boomer generation retires, it leaves a substantial number of vacancies. At the same time, fertility rates are insufficient to sustain the current population, and more domestic taxpayers are leaving the state than moving in.
Immigrants play a vital role in addressing this challenge by filling labor gaps, driving innovation, and supporting diverse industries— ultimately contributing to both economic growth and community development. Employing immigrants is crucial as they help fill labor shortages, drive innovation, and support diverse job sectors, which significantly contributes to economic and community growth.
The summit was the first step in bold action to address Nebraska’s labor shortages and foster a more welcoming community within the state. This groundbreaking event empowered business and industry leaders with the tools and knowledge to embrace immigrant talent, meet the state’s labor needs, and create welcoming communities. The event featured four panel discussions and a resource fair representing nearly 15 organizations.
The discussion panels brought together experts on the following topics:
● Teaching inclusive practices for the workplace
● Immigration law basics for employers
● Supporting immigrant workers’ retention and creating welcoming communities for newcomers to promote long-term belonging and well-being
Over 220 attendees from across the state gained valuable insights into fostering inclusive workplaces and a Nebraska community. As an agency, we were privileged to partner with the Nebraska State Chamber on such a transformative event.
“From my many years of experience working in immigrant inclusion, I’ve learned it takes collaboration across all sectors to proactively foster inclusive communities. I am thrilled that the chamber and business community have joined us for this event. When we create welcoming communities, everyone benefits,” said Khenda Mustafa, our Community Engagement Director.
We are grateful to have hosted such a great event and look forward to partnering with the Nebraska State Chamber again for this event in 2025!
