Tell us about your family’s roots.

My family is a mixed status family. My father immigrated to the US from Chihuahua, Mexico when he was a teenager in search of a better life. My mother was born in the US but grew up in Germany then as a teenager moved to the US as her father was part of the military which led them to moving to the states. Both have culturally rich roots that they have passed on to me and my siblings, I am so grateful for it.

What is your family’s migration story?

I’d like to focus on my father’s story. He is a construction worker and has been since immigrating to the US over 25 years ago. In 2019, he was pulled over then later detained for not having a drivers license or any form of Identification. He spent some time in a detention facility, it was a very difficult time for my family.

We were fortunate enough to be able to pay for an attorney and with her help, he was released from the detention center with a pending case. In 2021 a judge ruled he is able to stay in the US and that began the waiting process for his green card. Just under a month ago- he finally got his green card. To celebrate, he, my mom, and my sisters all took a last minute trip to Florida to celebrate.

He now is a green card holder, has a construction business, and is starting a laser metal hat design business. I am so proud of him and how resilient my family is and was during our difficult experiences.

What’s one memory, story, recipe, or item you and your family have carried with you?

One memory me and my family carry with us is the time is the moment outside of the USCIS building in Omaha right after the was granted a green card. We all hugged, cried, and celebrated. It was such a relief and bliss filled moment. I am enterally grateful.
