Tell us about your family’s roots.

My grandfather, Valentine J. Peter, arrived from Steinbach, Germany in the late 1800s. He had family in Rock Island, IL and lived with relatives. When his father died early on, he had to go to work to support his family. He had only finished 8th grade, but worked as a “Printer’s Devil”… basically cleaning up around the presses and learning the trade. Years later after he learned about the business and working the presses, he decided to move to California with his young family when the train stopped in Omaha. That was 1906 when a huge earthquake hit California and he decided to start his new life here in the middle of America. He raised 12 children and started a printing company that early on printed German newspapers and the company lasted over 100 years. He used his success to help other German families begin a new life in America. They spoke German in their home but all learned English. He gave back to the community and helped feed many during the Depression. He believed in Faith, family, honesty, hard work and generosity.

What is your family’s migration story?

My grandfather was in middle school in Germany living in the same mill as his ancestors. He had heard of many people heading to America for a better life, and since year after year there was a flood that wiped out much of any profit his family could garner from the mill, he tried to convince his parents to immigrate. They finally did, but his father only lived a couple years in America after they arrived.

What’s one memory, story, recipe, or item you and your family have carried with you?

We had a family reunion and shared our favorite recipes. Mine is my mother’s Rouladan. We still make it for Christmas and special dinners.

I also remember how the Arts were so important to the family. Dancing, singing or playing an instrument… all were supported and very important. I have tried to pass that to my family.
