Biden Administration announced the extension of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for eligible nationals of El Salvador, Sudan, Ukraine, and Venezuela

The Biden Administration announced the extension of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for eligible nationals of El Salvador, Sudan, Ukraine, and Venezuela for an additional 18-month period. These extensions allow qualifying individuals who previously registered or were approved for TPS under each country’s designation to re-register during yet-to-be-announced time periods. (Please monitor the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services website for the announcement of the re-registration period for each country.) Furthermore, re-registrants’ current TPS-based work permits will be automatically extended for a specified period of time.

The extensions will benefit eligible noncitizens as follows:

  • El Salvador: some 232,000 current Salvadoran TPS recipients may be eligible to re-register and have their TPS extended through September 9, 2026. Additionally, re-registrants will have their current TPS-based work permits automatically extended through March 9, 2026.
  • Sudan: approximately 1,900 individuals who have continuously resided in the U.S. since at least August 16, 2023, and who previously registered for TPS Sudan may qualify to re-register and have their TPS extended through October 19, 2026. Re-registrants’ TPS-based work permits will be automatically extended for 12 months.
  • Ukraine: some 103,700 Ukrainians who have continuously resided in the U.S. since at least August 16, 2023, and who previously registered for TPS Ukraine may be eligible to re-register and have their TPS extended through October 19, 2026. Re-registrants’ TPS-based work permits will be automatically extended for 12 months.
  • Venezuela: approximately 600,000 current Venezuelan TPS recipients (under either the 2021 or 2023 designation), who have continuously resided in the U.S. since at least July 31, 2023, may qualify to re-register and have their TPS extended through October 2, 2026. Additionally, re-registrants will have their current TPS-based work permits automatically extended through April 2, 2026.
